Botox
Really? Botox for Jaw Clenching and Headaches?
Yes! Botulinum toxin (Botox) is a substance approved by the FDA. It is an effective treatment for not only the signs of aging such as wrinkles and creases, it can also be used to treat various dental condition such as TMJ, TMD, teeth clenching and grinding, and even certain types of headaches. By strategically injecting Botox into specific facial muscles, we can relax them, providing relief from muscle tension and associated pain. This treatment can help alleviate symptoms, contributing to overall improved oral health and comfort.
How Does Botulinum Toxin work?
- Gentle injections temporarily relax selected facial muscles. When overactive muscles can relax, they can recover from overuse.
- Results are first noticed 2 -10 days after the procedure.
- Maximum benefit is reached in about two weeks.
- Results can last up to 3 -5 months.
Possible Side Effects of using Botulinum Toxin:
Botulinum toxin is considered clinically safe. Possible side effects include: transient headache or flu-like symptoms, swelling, bruising, pain during injection, twitching, itching, numbness, asymmetry (unevenness), temporary drooping of the eyelids or eyebrows. These side effects are rare, but have been reported.
